Chef Owner Shannon Sturz is guiding The Mariner Tavern into its next era, honoring more than fifty years in Ridgefield while bringing the precision and creativity he honed in some of the region’s most respected kitchens.

From guest to owner

Long before he stood behind the pass, Shannon was a familiar face in the dining room, a local who came in with family after winter ski trips in the 1980s and never forgot the feeling of being welcomed like one of the regulars.

Today he is chef and owner, only the third person to lead the restaurant in its half century in Ridgefield. That personal history matters: this is not a concept imported from elsewhere, but a homecoming to a place he has cared about his whole life.

The next generation of dining

Shannon’s path runs through serious, ingredient driven kitchens. He trained at The Culinary Institute of America and sharpened his craft as sous chef at The Inn at Pound Ridge by Jean Georges in New York, work that demands discipline, finesse, and respect for the product.

Most recently he served as executive chef at Seamore’s in Darien, the sustainable seafood group known for Montauk fish done simply and beautifully. That experience shows on the plate: seafood treated with care, seasons respected, and flavors kept clean.

At The Mariner Tavern, Shannon keeps the staples and spirit guests have loved for decades, from burgers and classics at the bar to the easy warmth of a neighborhood institution, while gently steering the kitchen toward French technique, seafood, and desserts worth lingering over.

The goal is not to reinvent the room, but to refresh it: familiar hospitality, food that feels both comforting and a little more ambitious than yesterday.

More than fifty years in Ridgefield

The Ancient Mariner, known to many today as The Mariner Tavern, has been at 451 Main Street since 1974. The room has toasted anniversaries, family suppers, and quiet dinners at the bar for more than half a century.
